Do you believe in coincidences? Our story is full of them. Two Milanese friends, Silvia and Veronica, reunite after years to share the same impossible dream: transforming an ancient 18th-century riad into a jewel of Moroccan hospitality.
“It was destiny, I’m convinced,” says Silvia smiling. “After years of silence, I had found my friend Veronica again. We had started dreaming again about that old project of ours to do something together. It all began at 16 when we dreamed of opening a clothing store… One day, more than 30 years later, she calls me all excited and says: ‘I found our riad…’ My heart started beating fast even before she finished the sentence.”
When we first crossed the threshold in 2018 of what would become Riad Alkemia, we found ourselves facing an 18th-century palace that carried the weight of decades of abandonment. The crumbling walls, damaged ceilings, and dust-covered floors told a story of lost magnificence.
“I remember stopping at the threshold and holding my breath,” Veronica recounts with emotion. “It was like entering an abandoned cathedral. There was a sacredness in that silence, a dignity that resisted despite everything.”
Yet, among those ruins, we could glimpse the authentic soul of Marrakech still pulsing, despite three centuries of sleeping history.
The riad presented a state of decay that would have discouraged many. The patio, the traditional central courtyard and beating heart of every Moroccan dwelling, was motionless and silent. No fountain, no sound of water that once brought freshness and life, completely invaded by weeds growing between the floor cracks.
“The patio broke my heart,” confesses Silvia. “Seeing that emptiness where life, water, joy should have been… But at the same time, I closed my eyes and already felt it being reborn. I already heard the sound of water that would flow again.”
The columns that once supported elegant arches were blackened by time and the walls showed deep cracks, true scars. Remains of ancient tiles lay broken and scattered, witnesses to lost magnificence, waiting to live again.
The ancient Berber doors told stories of merchants and travelers, but their woods bore time’s inexorable marks. Deep cracks crossed the carved surfaces, many decorative inlays were now illegible.
“Every door was like an ancient book with torn pages,” says Veronica gently touching the restored wood. “But the stories were still there, hidden under time’s dust. You just had to know how to listen with your heart.”
The walls, once white as Atlas snow, were now faded, stained by humidity and infiltrations that had marked decades of abandonment.
The rooms were completely abandoned and bare, without furniture or decorations. The cedar wood coffered ceilings, magnificent examples of Moroccan decorative art, were hidden under layers of dust and cobwebs, some damaged by water infiltrations.
“When I entered the first room, I was overcome with discouragement,” admits Silvia. “It was so empty, so sad. But then I looked up at that cedar ceiling and saw the beauty waiting to be freed. I whispered: ‘You will shine again.'”
The floors and walls in zellige were opaque like stars that had lost their light. The rooms surrounding the patio were dark and humid, with walled-up windows and doors hanging from rusted hinges.
The few remaining perforated brass lamps hung unlit from crumbling ceilings, deprived of their ancient dance of lights and shadows that once enchanted guests. Many were damaged, some missing entire pieces, all covered by a thick layer of dust that obscured their finest details.
“Those unlit lamps made me infinitely sad,” remembers Veronica. “I imagined the light they must have spread, the shadow games they created on walls. I promised myself I would make them shine again.”
The electrical system was nonexistent, the plumbing completely compromised. No functioning bathrooms existed, and the only illumination came from natural light filtering through the central courtyard’s open sky. The stairs leading to upper floors were precarious, and the terrace had become an accumulation of debris and rubble.
But you know what happens when two women get something in their heads? The impossible becomes possible!
“It was love at first sight,” remembers Veronica with sparkling eyes. “The peace, the sense of inner tranquility, the pure energy that space emanated conquered us immediately. It was like coming home after a long journey.”
“Everyone told us we were crazy,” laughs Silvia. “But we saw what others couldn’t see. We saw hidden beauty, potential sleeping under those ruins.”
Despite the state of decay, our vision was crystal clear: we wanted to restore this riad to its original dignity, maintaining all authentic architectural elements and offering a genuine glimpse into Moroccan culture, while integrating modern comforts to create an unforgettable stay experience, never betraying the place’s soul.
From that moment, the Alkemia project took on a life of its own, thanks to our wonderful architect Adriano, who knew how to translate a dream, a vision into reality. The renovation began with careful analysis of every recoverable architectural element. We decided to work exclusively with local master craftsmen, custodians of techniques passed down through generations, because we wanted every intervention to respect authenticity and traditional techniques.
“Watching those craftsmen at work was pure poetry,” recounts Silvia with emotion. “Their hands knew what to do, as if they had their own memory. Every gesture was precise, respectful, charged with history.”
“I still remember laying the pool tiles. Every single tile was cut in the moment with a small hammer and placed next to the previous one, with incredible speed and precision,” tells Silvia as she gets emotional.
This was followed by the structural consolidation phase. Foundations were reinforced, load-bearing walls restored. Woods that could be preserved were treated with natural oils that preserved their original patina, restoring robustness and beauty.
The central courtyard was completely repaved. “I still remember when Adriano called to tell me he had found the natural stones. That had been my idea, but despite having renovated dozens of riads before this one, no one had ever made such a request, so finding the stones was an unknown. That day on the phone I had tears in my eyes, because I knew they would be one of the most characterizing elements of our riad’s soul,” says Veronica with the same tears welling up.
The cedar wood coffered ceilings required millimetric intervention. Every beam was cleaned, treated and reinforced, integrating new elements where necessary but always respecting original designs. “Every geometric motif that was reborn was a victory,” says Silvia with pride. “The craftsmen told me: ‘Madame, this wood is more than three hundred years old, we must respect it like a wise elder.’ And they were right.”
Integrating modern technologies was one of the most delicate aspects. Lighting was studied to enhance decorations and create suggestive atmospheres, using traditional wrought iron and colored glass lamps.
The bathrooms represented a true creative challenge. We wanted them to be luxurious and functional, but always in harmony with the riad’s style. We used pieces from broken doors that could no longer serve their function to create surfaces and antiqued brass fixtures that integrated with the rest of the environment.
Today, when our guests cross Riad Alkemia’s threshold, they find themselves immersed in a magical atmosphere that unites ancient Marrakech’s charm with contemporary comfort.
“Every time I see guests’ eyes light up with wonder, my heart fills with joy,” says Silvia smiling. “They immediately know they’re in a special place, unique in the world.”
The central courtyard has become the riad’s open-air living room, pulsing with new life. A fountain pours crystal water into a pool surrounded by four majestic palms that create natural shade and freshness. Marrakech’s blue sky reflects on the water’s surface, creating light games that dance on restored walls.
“The day we heard the first sound of water in the fountain I was in seventh heaven,” confesses Veronica. “It was the riad’s heart starting to beat again. That sweet sound that had been missing for decades had finally come home.”
In the rooms, zellige tiles were completely replaced by white walls to give more light and traditional tadelakt in bathrooms, which feels wonderfully velvety to the touch. Each room today tells a different story, each with its own distinct personality.
The Aicha room, with its canopy bed, evokes fairytale atmospheres of One Thousand and One Nights.
The Fatima room with pool and patio palm views, creating a warm and enveloping atmosphere.
The Malika room is daily invaded by golden natural light filtering through its delightful little balcony crafted from waste beams, expertly decorated with ancient geometric designs in vivid colors.
The Maha with its traditional musical instruments adorning the walls and determining its character.
The Talitha suite represents the riad’s true jewel: 80 square meters that can accommodate up to 7 people, dominated by hand-decorated cedar ceilings dating back at least three hundred years, now restored to original splendor through months of meticulous restoration. And the stucco dome, which leaves anyone entering that room speechless.
“When we finished restoring the Talitha suite ceiling, we both cried,” they remember together. “Three centuries of history returning to shine thanks to our hands and those of master craftsmen. It was the most emotional moment of the entire project.”
And then interior decoration. Every element was chosen with maniacal care. Every carpet, every fabric, every chest chosen in souks or local artisan shops seemed to have been waiting for us forever. As if everything already knew where it would end up.
“It was a perfect dance between destiny and passion,” says Veronica with wonder. “Every piece I chose in the souks seemed to whisper to me: ‘Here I am, take me home.’ It was magical.”
The Zen area, the covered terrace on the first floor, where our ideas and dreams took shape during construction, has become a space vibrant with positive energy. Exposed beams, harmonious arches and soft light create the perfect place for winter breakfasts under shelter or intimate dinners in every season.
“The Zen area is my favorite spot,” confesses Silvia. “You’re halfway between sky and earth with unique and enveloping energy, with palm rustling in the wind and bird chirping… it’s exactly what I dreamed during sleepless nights during construction.”
The rooftop terrace has become the realm of fragrances and sensations. Blooming jasmine and white bougainvillea wrap the environment in a unique sensory atmosphere, where dinners under stars become magical experiences.
Looking at Riad Alkemia today, it’s hard to imagine the state of abandonment we started from.
“Sometimes I stop in the patio and can’t believe we started from those ruins,” says Silvia with teary eyes. “Every stone, every decoration has a soul now. We gave a second life to three centuries of history.”
It wasn’t just a restoration. It was a respectful rebirth that knew how to combine authenticity and contemporary comfort, an act of love toward Marrakech and its millennial culture. We restored life to a riad that risked disappearing, while creating a place where our guests can live the authentic Moroccan experience in absolute privacy and refinement.
“We didn’t just renovate a riad,” adds Veronica with pride. “We saved a piece of Marrakech’s history. We gave new life to a soul that was about to fade forever.”
Today Riad Alkemia can accommodate up to 15 people in 7 spacious rooms, with 6 bathrooms, a patio with pool, lounge with fireplace, traditional hammam, relaxation area and magnificent terrace, all rigorously for exclusive use.
But the true magic isn’t in numbers or technologies. It’s in love, dedication, determination of two women who believed in a dream. A dream that was only waiting to be awakened by the right hands, the right heart, the right vision.
“Every time our guests cross this threshold and their eyes light up with wonder, we know we’ve reached our goal,” they say together with emotion. “To revive Marrakech’s magic through the beauty of architecture that has known how to cross centuries.”
Because when two women get something in their heads, one thing happens: miracles become reality.
